On the way to Pidkamin' 2009

At the end of June somebody mentioned that Pidkamin’ was going to be on July 24-26, and immediately pleasant nostalgic reminiscences blocked our minds. We remembered going to that place two years ago. So, Pidkamin’ is a village in L’viv region and since 2007 also an ethnic festival. We were lucky to go there in 2007. At that time it was not very popular, however a budding fest. The associations I have with this place can be boiled down to: a folk music, a huge stone with all kinds of inscriptions, an ancient cathedral accompanied by an interesting monk-conducted guide tour, extraordinary people with rare hair-styles wearing different embroidery clothes, and, in general, the atmosphere of joy, freedom and youth. I shall not mention minor drawbacks connected with organization of the festival. They were forgotten as soon as a band “Komu vnyz” came on stage.
So, being tempted by the fact that this band would be participating in the festival this year, we had a great mind to go to Pidkamin’. As you know, a human being is apt to hesitate and have the second thoughts after making a decision. We were not an exception. I believe that our way to Pidkamin’ could be shown in the following chronological order:
July 22, Wednesday – 09:11 pm – after having a “glass of orange juice” on the Rynok square, we decide to go to Pidkmin’ on Saturday! Hurrah! Alea jacta est!
July 24, Friday – 10:02 am – the weather forecast for the next day on Gismeteo is not optimistic, to put it mildly, 16°C and rain.
03:00 pm – no changes in the weather forecast.
08:00 pm – still no changes and …we book tickets for an early bus to Pidkamin’, logical, isn’t it?!
Next morning (Saturday). 07:30 – we open our eyes, have a look outside – the sky is overcast, without doing a morning exercise we grab a bite, pack all necessary stuff, call to each other to make sure that we all are doing the same and agree to meet at “Kabinet” – usually – a café but for this Saturday morning the headquarters for us to meet and elaborate our plan.
10:43 – I am walking through the city centre with my backpack and guess what else … ye, my great friend in all my trips that covers me from the sky tears – my umbrella.
Around 11:00 – everybody who despite all the factors decided to go the festival meets at “Kabinet”.
The most repeated phrases of the next 40 minutes included: “it’s probably raining over there”, “I see no point in going….”, “but it can be an adventure”, “I like the music in this cafe”, “OK, we are not going”, “so, what can we do today?”
12:05 – we buy tickets for “Johnny D” (a gangster movie starring Johnny Depp; original title - "Public enemies")
15:20 – we are outside the cinema deciding what we could do next
15:40 – we are in marshrutka discussing another possible outcome of the movie just watched
16:10 – we are sitting in an open café discussing that it is not so bad that we did not go to Pidkamin’ and drink some “apple juice”
18:20 – we are in a taxi heading to the station # 2 to catch a bus to Pidkamin’. No comments.
19:25 – we are at our friends’ apartment having a picnic on a sleeping pad, that one of our friends was carrying around all day long.
I shall not tell you at what time the party ended. But I can tell you that the idea to go to Pidkamin’ was like an elephant in the room till late night.
We had a great time and I can say that every cloud does have a silver lining.
Well, these are just subjective thoughts of mine about one Saturday in July. If you’re looking for objective facts – go to http://pidkamin.ridne.net/.
The true names of my friends, cafes and locations were not mentioned due to obvious reasons. If you recognize somebody from this podcast, please don’t inform the police.
